Is our southern-most beach community Located at the southern tip of New Hanover County, it is approximately 15 miles from downtown Wilmington. Kure Beach is primarily a community of single-family homes; some are year-round homes and many are vacation homes. The beach is wonderfully un-crowded, primarily because there is not an abundance of parking or public beach access. Many of the newer neighborhoods are not oceanfront, but these neighborhoods often own oceanfront land that gives the residents access to the beach (often with parking and an oceanfront gazebo). Another unique factor at Kure Beach is its elevation. Some of the homes are as much as 33 feet above sea level. This means that most of the homes are NOT in a flood plain! Just south of Kure Beach at Fort Fisher are the ruins of Fort Fisher itself and the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. The fort was a strategic defense of Wilmington during the Civil War (and one of the last battles of the Civil War); today there is a well-designed small museum that enables you to understand just why this site was such an important one. The Aquarium has only recently re-opened after a complete renovation and expansion and is definitely worth a prolonged visit! So, do not overlook Kure Beach as you consider North Carolina beach towns; it is still quite affordable and wonderfully convenient to Wilmington and its many attractions.
